President Kanti welcomed everyone to the friendly El Cerrito Rotary Club and the pledge was led by Gary and Sal provided the thought for today.

Guests and visiting Rotarians:  Visiting Rotarians included Pate Thompson from Berkeley and Alan Baer from Richmond..  Guests today included Thomishia Booker and her husband Chris.  Pate had guest Shanda Parida.  Nancy McCarthy had daughter Amber as her guest.

Announcements:

  • Steve gave us an update on the Bowl-a-Thon. Fun and very successful.
  • Jane reminded us that today is the last day to sign up for the Kanti’s demotion dinner
  • The Interact club is doing a fundraiser at Zachary’s on Solano Ave in Berkeley onf May 31st. Fliers are available that when given to the cashier will result in the Interact Club being given 15% of your food cost.   If you want a flier, please email me and I will send you one.

 

Happy Dollars:      

Al is happy his leg is healing.  Nancy is happy her daughter and sister are both here today  Gary is happy for this special day when the new Interact Officer get inducted.  Terry is happy that his dog who found a skunk is finally had the smell eliminated.  Don is happy his daughter from Australia has arrived to enjoy a visit.   Rafael’s son is happy to be going into “dad’s” business.  Michael is happy about his experience at the Bay-to-Breakers event.  Marty is happy about an very enjoyable weekend.  Rafael is happy number 2 son is now finished at Cal and and joining his business. 

 

Sgt at Arms Sil:  Did trivia on Memorial day history.  He also recognized Marty’s birthday and Al’s and Jane’s anniversary.

 

Induction of New Rotarian:  Thomishia Booker:  Jack invited Thomishia to come forward and he and Jane did the induction.  It was a great ceremony.  Always good to induct new Rotarians.   May she have a successful adventure with The Friendly El Cerrito Rotary Club.

 Today’s Program.  Cheryl McCarthy from Funding America’s Retirement came to share with us how reverse mortgages can be a great resource for retirement age folks.  She passed handed out a brochure entitled 25 Ways to Use a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage.  She went through some of the key points and highlighted the advantages of ways this financial instrument can be used by those of us over 62 to live life better by taking advantage of the asset of our home.  Cheryl works with the organization Retirement Funding Solutions and she can provide many powerful options for seniors who have most of their net worth tied up in their home.

Induction of Interact Officers for 2017-18:

Gary called the Interact officers fpr this year and last year to come forward to the ceremony.  Jane assisted Gary in recognizing the officers.  Gary presented President Julia Phalen a thank you gift for her service and acknowledged her for all her efforts.  The new Interact Board members were presented with a certificate of office and a lapel pin and then the oath of office was read by Gary and repeated by the officers.  It was a great opportunity to meet the new officer and to say goodbye to the seniors who are graduating this year.  Thanks to Jane for her help.

The officer for this year are as follows:  Stephanie Baer, President, Natalie Chen VP of operations, Dillen Corlett, “VP of Finances/Records.  Sophis Lewis, Secretary/ Rotary Liaison,  Michael Phalen, Treasurer.  Fundraising Coordinator Michael Fox.  Miles Turman and Aidan Cooney, Project Managers.  Gabriel Myrick, Publicity/Webmaster.  The picture below shows the board.  The list of names above is not the order they are shown in the picture.

Raffle Winner:  Michael had his ticket pulled for the bottle of Vodka.  Gary had his ticket pulled to choose a marble and drew a cat’s eye marble.  Next week the jackpot will be $60.

 

Thought for the week:
