Guests and visiting Rotarians:

  • No board meeting on Sep 5th
  • Put Sept 16 on your calendar for the El Cerrito Centennial
  • Sip and Savor donations. Jan passed out sheets on which you can annotate the details of your donations to Sip and Savor.  Bring you completed form and the item to Terry at a Rotary meeting or remember that you must turn them in with the form on Oct 1 prior to 1pm.  That means you will have to go to the Club and make sure they are turned in!!
  • October 16th is when our District Governor Gary Vilhauer will visit the club. All board members are to be on site by 10:30a
  • Jane passed out the new Rotary Club shirts. They are beautiful and we owe $35 for them.  Give check to the treasurer.  If you did not get your shirt Jane will make sure you get your new shirt.  They are nicely made and fit well.  My shirt fits and looks good!!  Thanks to Jane for all her efforts.
  • Sonya told us about the new Sip and Savor sponsors.
  • Terry told us that District 5840 in Texas has set up an account for donations for Hurricane Harvey relief. Bring your check or $$ donation to next week meeting.  A collection was taken today for those who want to make a contribution immediately.  Not sure how much was collected today.  We will have a better idea after next meeting because the El Cerrito Rotary Foundation is going to match our individual donations.  Remember to bring your check of money for the Rotary effort to our meeting on September 7.

Special presentation:  President Terry gave Lee special recognition as Rotarian of the Month for his results for the funding he was able to obtain from the RI Foundation for the sign project for the El Cerrito Trail Trekkers project.  Terry expressed his heartfelt thank you for all the effort that Lee put into this successful grant of $10000.

 Today’s Program.

Jack introduced Sherwin Harris Assistant Director of the Bay Area Rescue Mission to speak to us about the successes they have achieved over the past year.  Sherwin knows how things work because he was a client of the Mission in 1988.  Sherwin shared two short videos as a way to set up his talk on how the organization helps homeless.  Rafael is the one who invited Sherwin.  Rafael was doing some work for the Mission by installing new carpets in building at the facility and thought it would be good for us to learn more about what is happening there.  The Mission has a new project to expand the bed capacity by 115 beds.  Currently they can provide beds for 250 people.  This three million dollar project is in the final stages of planning and about two thirds of the money to complete the project has been raised.  Sherwin told us about the volunteer and other support the Mission receives.  Last year the Mission building were reroofed and as mentioned Rafael put in new carpet in many of the buildings.   This was an excellent presentation that gave us a lot of quality information about this great community resource.  Thanks to Rafael for inviting Sherwin.

Thought for the week:

Remember it is not the size of the dog in the fight, it is the size of the fight in the dog that is important.
