 Happy Dollars:

Nancy is happy she had a visit from a sibling who has teenage daughters and Is glad they had a good time and that they are now departed.  Jack is happy about the guest Rotarians here today.  Mark is happy he participated in a 50 mile hike with his son and the Boy Scout troop he is in.  Rafael had $20 for being back after being away for 6 weeks working and making money.

Sgt at Arms:  Was on the job today with table trivia.  He was able to get two out of three tables in the pay column today.

Today’s Program:

President Terry introduced fellow Rotarian Mark Figone to bring us up to date on the state of refuse collection and recycling in the State of California.  Mark began with the history of garbage collection in the Northern California area and how that transitioned us into ways things are being done today.  In the past 40 years there has been a great emphasis on reducing land fills and getting recyclable materials out of the wast stream.  The phrase that was used by Mark is conversion technologies which means using ways to reuse and redirect materials out of the waste stream.   Mark statement that “garbage is not sexy” which means the main reason it is important to manage it is for public safety.  In fact everything that is done is looked at from that standpoint.  In addition, the finding for garbage collection has this as the number one goal.

I did not capture a lot of details from Mark’s presentation because he touched on so many key points.  All of his presentation was geared toward giving us an idea of the amount of emphasis that is going into the effort to collect and how much these action will increase costs of garbage collection.  This was and excellent presentation that truly says that management of garbage collection is much like “rocket science” given all the variable and unintended consequences that can result.  Thanks to Mark for shinning a light on a number of important things in one of the key activities in our society.  Garbage is not sexy but it is a critical part of what goes on in our society.
