Weekly El Cerrito Rotary Bulletin for May 2, 2019

May 2, 2019

Editor:  Gary Buffon

President Terry greeted everyone and Mac Robinson led the flag salute.  Terry offered a thought to the great turnout for our anniversary party.

We had many guests and visiting Rotarians.  This included Contra Costa Supervisor John Gioia, El Cerrito Mayor Rochelle Pardue-Okimoto, Taylor Kimber from Congressman DeSaulnier’s office.  District 5160 Governor Jon Dwyer visiting Rotarians from Berkeley, Albany and Richmond.  Also in attendance were many others we know and love who were on hand to celebrate this 70th birthday of El Cerrito Rotary.

We dispensed with the announcement portion of the meeting as we wanted to give enough time for the acknowledgement from all who were here to celebrate our Rotary Club’s 70th birthday.  See Todays Program for what happened at our meeting.

Happy Dollars: not done today.

Sgt at Arms:

Not on duty today

Todays Program:

President Terry began our program for the meeting.  He recounted his journey to his present role of club President.  He told a great story about how he was introduced to El Cerrito Rotary and shared some of the highlights of things during the journey.

Terry then asked our visitors to come forward and make their proclamations.  Supervisor Gioia was first, followed by EC Mayor Rochelle-Okimoto.  Next we had Taylor Kimber from Congressman Mark DeSaulnier’s office.

Then it was time for short presentation by El Cerrito Rotarians.

  • Jack Freethy did a highlights and recap of El Cerrito History.
  • Tracy Giles provided a summary of the club’s involvement in International Projects
  • Gary Buffon gave a brief summary of the El Cerrito High Interact club from from its inception in 2002 to this year.
  • Gary then pointed out the lovely blanket that was displayed at the front of the dinng room.  A gift from Kathleen Keller a fellow El Cerrito neighbor.  This blanket was made from the TeeShirts that we provided to guests at the El Cerrito city 4th of July celebration. Each year  Kathleen sent along a card which delivered a great message about the community service work of our Rotary club provides in El Cerrito.  The blanket will be raffled off at the Sip and Savor in October.
  • Sonya and Jane gave a brief summary of this year’s Sip and Savor.  This will be the tenth year of our event it will be GREAT
  • DG Jon Dwyer provided summary comments on his experience with El Cerrito Rotary and gave us hope and good wishes for the future

This was a great celebration with a great lunch and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.  We can do some more remembering at our next meeting on May 9th.

Todays Raffle: there was no raffle this week due to our special program.   Next week the pot will be $155.  Be sure and be there.

Thought for the Week:

What is history?  It is either what we experienced or were told about by others and either is a good thing!!
