An especially animated architectural historian, Marvin brings Morgan (1872-1957) to life, reminiscing about the designer’s experiences as a student in Berkeley and Paris in the 1890s, her philosophy of architecture and her colorful clients and associates including William Randolph Hearst and Bernard Maybeck. Morgan was known for her distinctive Craftsman and Mediterranean designs, her social conscience and her success in a male-dominated profession. In addition to San Simeon, she designed churches, clubs, schools, YWCAs and homes – more than 700 projects over a 50-year span.
